A Fun Guide to Easy Budgeting
So there you were, browsing the world wide web through your favorite search engine, when suddenly you spotted the perfect article you’d been searching for—a article all about living on a budget. Never mind the jammed shelves of books on all manner of topics—from sailing to scandal (with a wide variety of chicken soups)—what you need is a article to help you get a handle on your money. A handle on your life. Does this mean you must be broke? Heck, no! There are a zillion reasons to want to live on a budget, most of them good.Does this mean you’ll have to give up all the good things in life and live in strict adherence to a written budget? Endless evenings of examining columns of figures and making small notations with a red pencil? Not at all. As you’ll learn in the coming content, there are folks who have lived successfully on a budget for many years without ever having written anything down. There are folks with modest incomes who, because they’ve lived by a sensible budget, are able to live a much richer life than you’d imagine.
Will we be asking you to become monk-like in your lifestyle, eschewing all but the basics? No. It just isn’t necessary. We’ll ask you instead to embrace your financial situation with wisdom and discipline, not austerity.
Remember the goal: Use wisdom and discipline to achieve a positive financial (and emotional!) balance at the end of each month—or at least most months…. So let’s get started!
1. Understand your income. You know where your income comes from and your financial peaks and valleys through the year.
2. Understand your expenses. Ahh…the “financial forensics”—digging into every nook and cranny to capture the essence of your monthly, quarterly, and yearly expenses.
3. Set goals. Remember all that stuff about short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals? Talking it over with your spouse in the context of your newly acquired income and expense enlightenment? If you really did do this, you’re in great position to move forward.
4. Understand your habits and situation—much ado about where you spend, how you spend, and who in your family spends.
5. Get savings and spending mechanisms in place. Create the proper savings and reserves setup, the right credit cards, the right checking accounts, to put it “on the tracks” and keep it running.
6. Plan your income. Now that you know your income sources and their timing, you can lay out an income plan.
7. Plan your obligations. These are the “must-pays,” such as mortgage, rent, insurance, property taxes, car payments, and the like.
8. Plan your necessities. These are the “consumable” items and expenses, such as food, utilities, and basic maintenance expenses.
9. Set aside pocket money—spending money for daily and weekly incidentals, such as lunches, coffee, snacks, and video rentals.
10. Create a family allowance. This is where your family spending goals are covered, as well as recreation, entertainment, and routine outings.
11. Create a personal allowance. Your “PAL” is discretionary money that you alone can spend to meet goals or for whatever you want.
12. Balance and rebalance. Most often your budget doesn’t come out the way you want. Push and pull, and come up with a plan that achieves an acceptable balance. Remember, you are in charge!
It has been said, “Take care of the necessities, and the luxuries will take care of themselves”. We’ve also been told, “Take care of the pennies, and the dollars will take care of themselves.” Wouldn’t it be nice if that was all we had to worry about? So far we’ve focused on the groceries and gas, not the refrigerator and car they go in. And despite the lovely sentiments expressed in these old-fashioned quotations, we firmly believe you must pay attention to the big purchases. There are a lot of choices, and you are 100% in control of how much you spend on them. Done right, the impact of big purchases can be minimized and even turned into a positive experience for your personal finances. Done wrong, they can be first-order (nuclear) budget bombs.
