Freedom Debt Care and Credit Counseling
1. What are my payment options? Find an
agency that gives you some convenient
payment choices.
2. Does your credit counseling organization have accreditation?
3. What kind of training do your credit
counselors have? A good counseling
agency provides both internal training
and training with outside experts.
4. You might be
in this program for years, so make sure
you feel comfortable with the people
you’ll be dealing with. Look for friendly,
courteous staff who are willing to answer
your questions.
5. Will you send me information about
your organization and programs? An
agency should be willing to give you
information about its services—and
you shouldn’t have to provide account
numbers, debts amounts, or other
information to get it. If an agency won’t
give you information up front about its
programs, consider it a warning sign.
6. Will you help me with all my debts?
Most credit counseling agencies work
only with credit card debt because
secured lenders (those that offer
mortgages and car loans, for example)
won’t make automatic reductions in
rates and terms. Some agencies will
make payments on secured debts as a
convenience to you, however. If this is
important to you, ask about it.
7. Can you still help me if I cannot afford
the minimum payment in a debt
management program? Avoid agencies
that turn you away or tell you to file for
bankruptcy because you can’t meet their
requirements. A good agency should be
able to guide you to other resources that
can help.
8. How high are the fees? Look for a group
with low fees. Some agencies
charge steep up-front fees just to
participate in their program. Ask for
information about set-up fees, monthly
fees, and other charges, and make sure
the agency doesn’t charge a fee to close
your account.
9. What kind of security measures do you
have to protect my information? Make
sure the agency you use has sufficient
security in place to protect your Social
Security number and other confidential
information.
10. Can I get up-to-date, regular reports of
the status of my account?
